About Cacauwe — clothing, teaware and ceremony objects

Clothing, teaware and ceremony objects, many of them made by hand.

Cacauwe takes its name from cacao. Most of what we sell goes with a slow ritual at home: clothing to sit and move in, tea and the pots to brew it, and the drums, incense, altar cloths and jewellery of a ceremony. When we know where a piece was made and how, we say so. Otherwise we make no claim.

Made by hand

Many of our pieces are made by hand. The printed bands on our Kairos kimonos are pressed one wooden block at a time. Several of our wool shawls are handwoven. Other pieces are block printed or embroidered by hand, and some of our clothing is made in Bali.

Because the work is done by hand, colour, grain and pattern vary a little from one piece to the next.

Where it comes from

Our altar mats are embroidered by hand by Shipibo women in the Peruvian Amazon. Some of our teapots are handmade in Yixing and Jianshui clay; our gaiwans and cups come in Jingdezhen porcelain, and in Koishiwara and Shigaraki pottery from Japan.
